How does the process work?
First, choose a company to handle the cryopreservation. Fellow is the company we’ve previously worked with for cryopreservation. However, you’re welcome to use any other provider of your choice, as we are not affiliated with Fellow. But to give you an idea of the process, here’s how it works with Fellow:
- Order your kit – Once you decide on cryopreservation, you’ll order a kit. To order directly from Fellow, click here.
- Provide your sample – Follow the instructions carefully, then ship your sample back in the provided, temperature-controlled packaging.
- STI testing – You’ll also complete a simple STI blood test at a local lab, which is required for sperm storage.
- Storage – Once the lab verifies the quality and motility of your sperm, it is securely frozen at -320°F and stored for as many years as you’d like.
When do I do this in relation to my vasectomy?
Cryopreservation is done before your vasectomy. After your sample has been processed and approved by Fellow, we’ll move forward with scheduling your vasectomy. On the day of your vasectomy, you’ll also receive a different sperm testing kit to confirm, months later, that your vasectomy was effective.
How safe is sperm banking?
Very safe. Sperm samples are stored in state-of-the-art labs under carefully controlled conditions. Cryopreservation allows sperm to remain viable for years, even decades.
Can I change my mind later and use the sperm?
Yes. If you decide you want children in the future, your frozen sperm can be used for IVF or IUI. Having banked sperm is far more reliable and cost-effective than attempting a vasectomy reversal.
Is cryopreservation expensive?
