Vasectomy Requirements Checklist

If you’re thinking about a vasectomy, it’s important to know the requirements before you schedule a consultation. While getting a vasectomy is a safe, effective, and relatively simple procedure, there are medical, age-related, and personal health considerations to review beforehand. At Tri-Valley Vasectomy in Livermore, we take each patient’s situation seriously to ensure the procedure is right for them. Below, we’ve put together a straightforward checklist of the main requirements every patient should know.

✔ Age Requirements

  • You must be at least 18 years old to legally undergo a vasectomy in the U.S.
  • At Tri-Valley Vasectomy, we do not perform vasectomies on men under 25.
  • Patients 30 and younger without children must complete cryopreservation (sperm banking) first.
  • If you’re under 30 and already have children, we’ll review your case in consultation.

✔ Family Planning Commitment

  • Vasectomy should be considered permanent.
  • If you are young, child-free, or uncertain about your future goals, you’ll receive additional counseling.
  • Sperm banking is strongly encouraged if there’s any chance you may want children later.

✔ Weight and Fitness

  • There are no strict weight limits, but being significantly overweight can make the procedure more technically challenging or impossible to perform.
  • Maintaining good physical fitness helps support a smoother recovery.
  • If your weight may impact the procedure, we’ll discuss it during your initial consultation.

✔ Pre-Existing Medical Conditions

  • Infections: Any active infection, especially in the scrotal area, must be treated before the procedure.
  • Bleeding Disorders/Medications: Men with bleeding issues or those on blood thinners may require adjustments or additional precautions.
  • Chronic Conditions: Uncontrolled diabetes, cardiovascular disease, or other serious conditions will need evaluation with your primary care provider.
  • Anatomical Variations/Previous Surgeries: These may require a more detailed exam to plan the safest approach.

✔ Counseling and Consultation

  • A comprehensive consultation is required before the procedure.
  • You’ll review your health history, the permanence of the decision, and any personal concerns.
  • Younger patients or those without children will undergo more extensive counseling and must discuss cryopreservation.

Take our screening quiz: Should I Get a Vasectomy?

Most healthy men who meet the age and health requirements can safely undergo a vasectomy. The consultation is your opportunity to ask questions, share your goals, and make sure this is the right step for your life and family plans. At Tri-Valley Vasectomy, we take the time to understand your unique situation and ensure you have the clarity and confidence needed to move forward.
