If you value vasectomy as effective birth control, but are unsure about your future fertility, then cryopreservation is an excellent option. We also require cryopreservation if you are between the ages of 25 to 30 and do not have children.
Cryopreservation, also known as sperm banking, freezes sperm at a specialized lab. The sample can be used in the future for in-vitro fertilization (IVF) or intrauterine insemination (IUI).
Watch Dr. Elyas Parsa provide an overview of cryopreservation - what it is, who it's for, and why it's a better alternative to vasectomy reversal.
During your initial vasectomy consultation, we will discuss the option of sperm storage. If you would like to add this option, you will order directly from Fellow.
When you receive the kit, carefully follow the instructions provided to ensure a quality sample. When the lab receives your sample, they will test the sperm.
You will also receive a requisition for a STI test via blood draw, which you can complete at a local laboratory. STI testing is required for cryopreservation.
We both get results of all testing directly from the Fellow laboratory. If everything looks good, then we will schedule your vasectomy.
Whether or not you choose cryopreservation, you will receive a sperm collection kit on the day of your procedure. This is provided at no additional charge. Take this home with you and mail it in a few months later to make sure that no sperm are present.
So, if you schedule your vasectomy with us and want sperm banking, you will receive two kits at two separate times: one ordered from Male From Home and shipped to your home for cryopreservation, and a second one that we give you on the day of your vasectomy to mail in a few months later.
We partner with Male From Home, a CLIA-certified laboratory. You will order directly through their website.
Your sample is mailed in a preservation solution inside temperature-controlled packaging. This extends the life of your sample and ensures that everything is in optimal condition when it arrives at the lab.
When your sample is mailed to their laboratory, the motility and quality of the sperm are verified prior to storage. STI testing is also required for storage and is completed through a local laboratory at no additional charge. This testing ensures the safety and health for any future embryos.
Samples are securely stored at -320°F for as many years as you would like.
